Why build this website?

A couple of reasons.

First: Nobody's monetizing me here. Sure, I'm paying for the domain and the hosting service, but nobody's making money off of me or my information. My reach and growth and engagement are all organic, and reflect my effort in those areas.

Second: I'm showing my age here, but there was a time when this kind of site was the norm. In the early days of the public Internet, people would buy a domain and build a blog, and just go nuts sharing their passions and personal knowledge via lengthy posts. Who knows how much specialized information collected by people with an avid interest has been lost because of the mass migration to social media sites?

Third: My speech here is free. Whatever certain other sites claim about being defenders of free speech, content is moderated and filtered and presented by an algorithm to keep you scrolling. You want my thoughts? Here they are. Log in, or don't. Both are okay.
